Edwin (Ed)'s Story

Life Hello Everyone. I have been blessed with a wonderful woman imported all the way from Texas 23 years ago. We are raising two great sons. I'm not exaggerating -- but I'm not impartial either. I have intentionally remained in Prince Georges County, Maryland, barely 8 miles from my childhood home since returning to the area after school. My family, my faith and my business are at the core of my life. I am so fortunate to be able to do what I love to earn a living and make a difference. School I had the privilege of attending the great Fairmont Heights High-- a school rich in history for our community and my family. Fairmont Heights opened in 1950 as one of two high schools for African American's in Prince George's County, Maryland. During the era of racially segregated classrooms, it established a proud tradition of excellence. It's teachers, administrators and staff believed that the education they offered its students would be pivotal in the options they would have later in life. College College was the intersection with people and events that literally changed the direction of my life. I attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. In the early 1970's, Brown didn't have the trendy image it has today. It was often thought of as the Ivy League school that was a bit "different" and avant-garde. It was also the poorer sister in the league operating with much fervor, but fewer resources. (That position has changed dramatically since then -- especially under the amazing leadership of President Ruth Simmons.) Brown's small size provided me with the opportunity to explore relationships and experiences that might not have been possible in a larger environment. After Brown, I immediately went to business school to sharpen my skills. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's M.B.A. programs seemed uniquely suited for preparing someone like me to transition from my liberal arts background to the world of business. Once again providence intervened. I choose Carolina based on an article I ...Expand for more
read about business schools. While Carolina had a great program, uniquely suited to me, it has since gotten the national recognition it deserves for the great education it offers in what is now called the Kenan-Flagler School of Business. More later. Military I did not have the privilege of serving in the military. The service of my late father and my in-laws has given me an appreciate for those that serve and their families. Professional Life My first job out of the M.B.A. program was with the management consulting side of Coopers & Lybrand, the predecessor to PriceWaterhouseCoopers. After a year in consulting, I spent the next 20 years in various business development positions in the information technology industry. I had some great opportunities and met some great people along the way, but I can't say I enjoyed my professional life during that period. I finally discovered my professional calling in a series of events that began after the death of my father in 1999. Today, I have the pleasure of serving smart and motivated clients as a financial planner. I find that there are a lot of misconceptions about what financial planning is or what a financial planner does, so please visit my website if you'd like to know more. I serve some of the most wonderful people as clients. The majority of my clients are owners of closely held businesses or clergy plus a significant number of medical professionals and attorneys. However, my life philosophy means that I will work with anyone that is motivated to accomplish their goals. We also have a business specializing in health insurance. We serve individuals and small businesses, churches and non profits by helping them find plans that are the best fit for their specific needs and their budgets. All of the changes and trends in health care have made it a fascinating business. Community We have been active at Woodstream Church in Mitchellville, Maryland for more than 20 years. We appreciate the clear preaching and teaching of God's word and the warm fellowship.
